Rice is undoubtedly one of the most valuable food items across the globe and in India it is a very important part and parcel of our staple diet. Basmati rice is very popular today primarily for the fact that it contains several nutrients. It is also pocket-friendly for most people. If you check the other most common rice in the world, you will find that it is parboiled rice. It is white in color and consumed by people both in India and across the globe.

Now the question arises- what is the difference between parboiled rice and basmati rice? The following points are the key differences between parboiled rice and basmati rice-

1.Size and appearance- If you look at parboiled and basmati rice, you will find that both of these rice variants do not look the same. Basmati rice is smaller in size however once cooked it becomes longer. It also cooks faster over parboiled rice. It is important for you to note that when you are cooking basmati rice, you must ensure that you do not allow it to cook for an extended period of time or else it will become very soft and sloppy. Parboiled rice also cooks fast however if you keep ...
... it on the stove for a very long time, it tends to become mushy.

2.Taste and flavour: When it comes to taste and flavour, parboiled rice lacks any added flavour. It is plain in nature and can be taken with just about any dish. It will not take the flavour away from the main dish. If you check out Basmati rice, you will find that it boosts of a more delicate and exotic flavour. This means you can only pair it up with a few certain dishes. Basmati rice can be teamed up with Indian and Oriental dishes. In fact, these dishes are incomplete without Basmati rice.

3.Fragrance: Basmati rice lends out a exquisite aroma while it is being cooked. The fragrance of this rice is unique. The taste and smell make the experience of relishing Basmati rice a unique one. On the other hand, Parboiled rice does not give out a fragrance. You just need to simply cook the rice in water till it is ready to be taken away from the stove. This is distinct quality of this rice as it generally complements any dish.

4.Texture: When it comes to boiling, you will find that Basmati rice takes less time to boil. It also retains its shape and the grains never stick to one another. This is why it is the most ideal dish for Biryani that are completely rice dishes. Parboiled rice, on the other hand is the right dish for making puddings as the grain sticks to one another.

Therefore, from the above it is evident that basmati rice and parboiled rice are not the same. It is true that both these rice variants are different but they do have a unique place in Indian and oriental cuisine. Parboiled rice can be paired with just about any dish and basmati rice with curries.
