Supplements are a widely debated topic in the muscle building community. Some people swear by supplements, others refuse to have anything to do with them.

As usual, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Contrary to what the supplement manufacturers would have you believe, merely ingesting a cocktail of the best muscle building supplement won't help you to get ripped and shredded. Supplements are simply a convenient way of ensuring that your body gets all the nutrition it needs to build muscle mass.

The stress is on the word "convenient." Sure you can get all the necessary nutrition through your diet, but think about the time and effort that you'll have to put in to make the five to seven daily meals that you'll be consuming to maximize your muscle growth.

According to me, creatine is by far one of the best muscle building supplements. Creatine not only helps in muscle building but also benefits other parts of your body. Creatine helps to keep a check on high cholesterol levels and protects your neuromuscular system from diseases such as muscular dystrophy.

What is creatine?

Creatine ...
... is found naturally in the body and in foods like beef, salmon, and herring. The powdered form of creatine, however, is its best source.

Creatine helps to increase the efficiency with which your body uses Adenosine Tri-Phosphate (ATP). ATP is used by the body as a sustainable source of energy. The greater the level of ATP in a cell, the better is the cell function. Creatine helps the cells of your body in maintaining or increasing their ATP levels, making it the best muscle building supplement.

In the body, creatine is stored as creatine phosphate, and it donates its phosphate component to recharge the Adenosine Di-Phosphate (ADP) in the cells to ATP. ADP is discharged or "spent" ATP, and creatine helps it to recharge so that it can once again be used to provide energy.

Research has shown that consuming creatine increases the creatine phosphate of the cell and sustains anaerobic exercises (weight lifting or sprinting) for the body. It is used in weight training as a performance enhancer.

Not only is creatine one of the best muscle building supplements, it also maximizes the functioning of your heart and is especially invaluable for those who have suffered from heart failure. It increases the ejection fraction of the heart, a number that indicates how strongly the heart pumps, and this leads to an increase in your capacity to exercise.

Creatine is generally provided to the body as creatine monohydrate, and for muscle building athletes, moderate to large gains are found in the ability to lift weights over time.

Creatine was discovered way back in 1832, but it was only nearly a century later (in 1923) that it was discovered that 95 percent of this creatine is found in the muscles. Three years later, its effects on bodybuilding were discovered.

Creatine is naturally found in the body and is produced in the liver, kidney, and pancreas to strengthen the muscles. You augment this effect by consuming creatine as a supplement.

Creatine has never been banned by any sports organization because it is fully natural and is present in many foods. The best muscle building supplement is creatine monohydrate in a supplement form, taken at a dosage of roughly 5 grams per day.

The best times to consume creatine supplements are early in the morning or immediately after your workout. Creatine should always be consumed alongside a liquid serving of simple sugars in order to maximize its absorption.
