Looking for more ways to save money? There are many things a person can do to ease the pocketbook a bit, including making some changes in the way we prepare our food. Change need not be hard, it just need to be done. This article presents four food ideas that can save you money, and make your food budget go a little further.

1) Make your own pickles. Store bought pickles can be expensive, so making your own at home is not only easy to do, but it will save you some money. Buy your vegetables and fruit when it's in season to get the best price. Pickle as much as you can because the more you do the more cost effective it is. Enjoy your pickles throughout the year and relish the fact that your made it all yourself.

2) Add carrots. Add a couple of grated carrots to the ground meat you are cooking. This serves a couple of purposes: (a) It stretches out your meat in the same way that bread crumbs do, thereby making your meal more cost effective and saving you money. (b) It's a great way to add extra vegetables to your menu. You won't even realize the carrots are in the mix because the carrots take on ...
... the flavors of the meat you are cooking.

3) Make your own granola or muesli cereals. Since the main ingredient of granola and muesli is oats-a relatively inexpensive grain when you buy in bulk, you can save money by making your own cereals. Buy the oats and the other ingredients at the bulk bins, and combine them to make delicious and healthy cereal at home.

4) Buy a bread maker. Who doesn't like the mouth-watering smell of fresh baked bread in the house? Yum! Bread makers have become very affordable in recent years, and they are a fun and easy way to make delicious homemade bread. If you and your family eat a lot of bread, it would be worth your while to buy a bread maker and bake it yourself. For further cost-effectiveness, don't buy the ready-made bread mix, but buy separate ingredients and combine it yourself. It will not only be cheaper, but also taste better than the packaged mixes.
