While most of us know that oil is measured in barrels, it is not a measure that is used everywhere. However, in most oil producing countries and in oil transactions, it is a popular measure of oil. The origin of this measuring term is interesting. In history, oil used to be stored in barrels actually though in those times the standardization of the barrel sizes was not in vogue.

Olden day measures of oil

The first oil fields were tapped in the US in the 1860s. At such a time oil used to be pumped into containers of different sizes which included cracker barrels, pickle barrels and whisky barrels. Soon wooden containers akin to whiskey barrels become a popular storage container offered by oil measure suppliers. It was used to store crude oil before it was shipped or taken for refinery processes.

At the time when the whiskey barrel was used to store liquid or oil, the oil measure suppliers made them of dimensions that allowed 40 gallons to be stored in each. In order to ensure that the customers received 40 gallons if not more, the barrels were overfilled up to 42 gallons. Hence, even today 42 gallon mark ...
... is used in the US which has become a standard measurement for oil in this country.

Modern standards

Today steel drums are used instead of wooden barrels. This helps to protect against leakage and to prevent possibilities of contamination. The steel drums are designed to hold about fifty gallons of oil in each through the standard 42 gallon barrel is a standard measurement in many places. This measurement is used to indicate the oil produced in Saudi Arabia countries as well.

The other oil producing countries do not use the barrel measurement to signify their rate of production. That is also because the oil that is pumped out is shipped out through pipelines directly to refineries or they are transported via tanker trucks or cargo ships when they need to be delivered to distance or overseas places.

Getting the right equipment suppliers

The individual companies which are into oil production might get the oil into barrels, but commercial producers do not follow the process anymore. Only in the case of crude products or derivatives like kerosene, gasoline or other forms of crude oil, the need for drums or barrels exist. Companies that are into the production as well as refinement of oil need specific equipments like tow chains grade 80. They need the right suppliers for these equipments which need to be of a certain grade and quality. For those who are looking for new suppliers or need vendors in a new region of operation, they can look up suppliers of tow chains grade 80 and similar equipments online. That will help one to shortlist a vendor in a small time span. It is easily done once the quality of goods is determined and quality assurance or certification in relevant fields of production is verified before a contract is formed with a vendor.

Agri-Hardware offer a good range of top-quality tow chains grade 80 and fittings that possess an amazing strength to weight ratio. These versatile chains and fitting equipment are useful for all your lifting purposes.
