Achieve a lower energy charge

Pruning gas use is a popular theme in the press and television set. It is also financially beneficial when you consider the continuous increase in gas costs driven on by your gas heating system. The typical UK household spends about half of it's gas costs on central heating system energy use. Below we have listed some ways in which you can take simple actions two lower your modern energy costs.

Check where you are using the heating boiler :
If you have a spare bedchamber that is not being used turn off the central heating radiator in the room. Why heat rooms which are not going to be used, this only increases your gas consumption. If you keep the entrance door closed to the room it will prevent the flow of cold air around your home.

Prefer the gas boiler in preference to using a fire :
A gas boiler is much more cost-efficient than using a fire to heat one room. With coal or wood fires most of the heat disappears up the flue, modern central heating systems are much more efficient in heating your home than using an electric fire.

Draft proof where you have ...
... draughts
As chilly draughts blow into your home money passes out in the opposite direction. DIY stores stock many insulation materials for use for this. Use a foam based sealant to close off any gaps between your door frame and the window frames where these meet the exterior wall. These type of cracks happen often in elderly homes as the foundations settle. If you are careful and use a wax candle flame you can detect where drafts are in a room.

Don't switch up the heating, put on more clothes :
Putting on incremental clothing or just being active for a while will mean that you get warmer without turning up the heating thermostat. You can save up to tenpercent on your heating expenses just by reducing the thermostat by 1°.

Make greater use on your drapes to control temperature :
The sun is very effective at heating your house in the winter, when shining, if you keep the curtains opened to allow it in. At night as the outside temperatures drop a lot of heat can leach outside through your windowpanes. Closing the curtains provides an insulating layer which helps stop this, this can can save you real money in the longer term. Thin curtains are not as effective as thick ones at preventing this heat loss.

General tips for the rest of the home :
Insulate the hot water cylinder if your boiler has one. Hot water will quickly cool down unless retained in an insulated cylinder.

The use of aluminium foil on the wall by your radiator can be used to reflect heat into the room rather than out into the wall and the street.
