If becoming a nurse practitioner has been an option in your list of possible careers, then you probably would want to know what the daily routine would be like. It's pretty easy to imagine based on knowing what the career is all about but then again, words can paint a picture. So read on and find out what a day in the life of a nurse practitioner is like.

The day would start off with checking messages, notice boards and voice messages on the answering machines along with emails for messages and replies to any questions or queries. Next, a routine lab report check would be in order and the NP would need to start on writing lab letters to patients if necessary then start on the daily patient visit rounds. This would cover each and every patients of the ward, to check up on their recovery progress and if any disturbance occurred the previous night.

If the nurse has first time patients, then there would be forms to fill and patient information to be gathered. The NP would need to jot down the patient's family medical history, symptoms and then get the patient a complete medical examination. Then, the next thing to ...
... be done would be to educate the patient about the illness that they may be suffering from once the diagnosis has been confirmed. Besides that, NP are also required to deal with new medication prescriptions and refill medications as well. After that, various medical check ups and routines are carried on until break time.

Once break is over, the nurse will then repeat the morning's routine again and then meet with the attending doctor and pass on information about the patient's well being such as complaints, progress and so on. During whatever spare time there may be, the nurse would need to catch up on reports, paperwork, progress charts and so on. If there were calls during the check up rounds, these calls would need to be returned, but sometimes this can be done by the doctor too.

All in all, a day as a nurse practitioner can seem easy to some and tough to others, but with the right attitude and a passion for people, this job is one to love.
