What You Need To Know About Hoist Types
These machines are operated using electrical or pneumatic power, and can be controlled either manually (in the case of cranes and the like) or using automated equipment. While wire hoists as well as chain hoists have been in use for a long time, electric hoists have only grown in popularity in the 1900s, which makes these a relatively new entrant.
Another key thing to know here is that heists are made in two forms: package units and built-up custom units. Package units, as the name indicates, are those that are made as one integral package. These are non-versatile, but can handle relatively heavier loads. Custom units, on the other hand, are made of a number of individual parts that can be put together as and when required. These were initially known to have smaller load capabilities, but recent models have been made to carry heavier loads as well.
Hoists are simply indispensable in the worlds of construction and mining. In construction, hoists are used to lift personnel, materials, and equipment to higher levels. Without these devices, construction of high-rise buildings ...
... would be difficult indeed! In mining, hoists are used for conveyance up and down the mining shafts.
Buying and Hiring
Unless you’re a full-time construction company, buying a hoist is a simply unnecessary expense. If (say) all you need to get done is a bit of remodelling or renovation, you can explore various hoist hire options. Especially now since the internet has taken over most of our business dealings, hiring a hoist is as simple as going onto a hiring service’s website and making a deal.
Before you buy or hire, it’s good to know the basic kinds of hoists on offer today.
The Types of Hoists
Overhead hoists come in a number of variants; knowing the basics of each one, you’ll be able to choose which one suits your project best.
Boom Hoists
These are similar to boom cranes, in that these also have a boom unit at the base. These are generally used to load weights on containers. They don’t have much manoeuvrability, because of the boom’s limited rotation axis.
Bucket Hoists
Though they may vary slightly in shape, bucket hoists can be pictured as the buckets used to draw water from wells. They have a horizontal arm on which a hook may be attached for lifting or lowering.
Platform Hoists
These are the single-axis hoists generally seen on the sides of tall buildings under construction. These are operated using a platform-mounted control system, and usually carry workers to upper storeys that don’t have stairwell access yet.
Tractor Hoists
The self-explanatory name says it all; these consist of a boom that carries a rope through its length. The boom is mounted on a mobile tractor rig, and can be operated through driver controls.
These are the various types of hoists used commonly. Choosing one depends upon the size of the project at hand, and the pace at which it is expected to be carried out; having a hoist can make all the difference you’d need in terms of project completion time and efficiency rates.
