FABRICS BEST SUITED FOR INDIAN OUTFITS
When it comes to ethnic clothes, things get crazy and in a completely amazing way! There are colours, sequins, embroideries and of course, lots and lots of fabrics to choose from. In this article, we break it down for all of you and tell you some of the best fabrics for desi clothes! Ladies, take note!
Chiffon & Georgette
These fluid-ish fabrics have our minds instantly running to Sushmita Sen, aka Ms. Chandni from ‘Main Hoon Na’. These fabrics are what make the dreamy, flow-ey, sarees, lehengas and anarkalis. Light and beautiful, chiffon and georgette looks best in bright colours and are perfect for relatively easier to manage Indian outfits. It’s almost like these fabrics have been made for the times you want to go big on drama, but not the weight of the outfit.
They can be worn for simple occasions, and festive too. All you have to do is add in a little bit of bling and you’re good to go. Chiffon and Georgette are so essential to the Indian wardrobe, that we recommend an outfit in these fabrics are almost essentials!
Net
Playful, ...
... young and fun, net outfits almost always give out that vibe and we are not complaining! Not only does net work well as a fabric in itself, it’s also a great base for some sequined embroidery and work.
The best part about a net outfit is the silhouette it creates – it’s the perfect one for an Indian outfit! It’s got a graceful fall and can provide the perfect flare for your outfit. Net fabric works best with lehengas, anarkalis and sarees.
Brocade
This fabric may not be from India originally, but the Indian wear closet has welcomed brocade with open arms and it’s a part of the family now. While there are many kinds of brocade fabrics used across several products, brocade in Indian clothing is extremely popular, coming with its own set of tweaks to suit our style, of course!
While brocade is actually a kind of embroidery, it is often so intricate that it’s passed off as fabric in most shops. Cue throwback to the time you were in a fabric shop and your conversation with the shopkeeper went something like this:
You: Bhaiya, kpo acha fabric dikhao, heavy type.
Shopkeeper: Haanji madam, yeh dekhiye, brocade fabric har colour mein! Golden embroidery aur silver embroidery, dono type ke hain.
Because of its richness, Brocade is perfect to lend a certain amount of “festivity” to your Indian outfit and it almost never disappoints and can be counted upon in times of confusion. A brocade works well for lehengas, as well as choli, blouses and kurtas.
Silk
For the times you want to leave no head unturned and want to feel like royalty, silk is what you should turn to. Regal and beautiful, silk is often subtle but oh-so-majestic in every which way possible.
Best used in sarees, silk sarees are the ones we see passed as heirlooms from generation to generation. However, it’s important to note that while silk sarees are the most popular of all, silk lehengas and chudidars suits look equally gorgeous!
Cotton
For the simpler times, the good old cotton is perfect to the T. It’s durable, comfortable and of superior quality, making it one of the most preferred and loved fabrics for simple ethnic wear. Cotton suits and sarees are worn by lakhs and lakhs of women across the length and breadth of India. We’ve got so much diversity in our culture, but cotton ethnic outfits easily beat these lifestyle barriers in a jiffy!
