A Day In Work As A Physical Therapist
Working as a physical therapist is becoming a more popular choice of career in the US. The attractive income and the huge market of clients are some of the factors which are alluring to those planning to become one in the future. But before you decide to become a physical therapist, it is essential to explore the nature of the work and what is involved in a day-to-day work.
As a physical therapist, you would be working with patients with disabling conditions such low-back pain, fractures, head injuries, stroke and Parkinson's disease. These conditions might be caused by injuries, illness or by birth. You would help the patients by providing services that would relieve pain, improve mobility, restore function and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities.
You would assess and evaluate the patients' condition based on the medical records, doctor's recommendation and test results. From there, a personalized treatment program would be developed for the patients. Treatment usually includes exercises that would help patients' muscle strength, motor skills, coordination and endurance, especially for patients who ...
... have been immobilized. These exercises would promote the use of patients' muscle to increase the flexibility and range of motion.
Other methods used for treatments include hot and cold compresses, deep-tissue massage and heat or water therapy, depending on patients' conditions. You would also educate the patients on how to use devices that can improve their comfort, such as crutches and prostheses, and also exercises which can be done at home to expedite recovery.
As the treatment program progresses, you would record the development and any progress that was made by the patients. Periodic assessments and examinations are also conducted to determine the effect of the treatments towards the patients' recovery. Treatments might need to be modified if necessary.
These are basically the tasks involved in a day's work as a physical therapist. So if you feel that this is your cup of tea, you need to plan ahead so that you would reach your goal of becoming one.
