New Mazda Bt-50 Petrol Variant Ruled Out
Read any Mazda BT 50 review and you are likely to find the model very attractive. With the current Mazda BT 50 for sale, Perth drivers will find a model offering an amazing variety with single or double cab, two wheel or four wheel drive. However, what is missing from the line up is a petrol base variant. Unfortunately Mazda has confirmed that in spite of other companies offering a petrol base model, Mazda will not be adding one to their line up.
The Entry Level Competition:
Details of the 2016 BT-50 line-up have just been released. Mazda BT 50 review articles confirm that the line-up will still begin at $25,570 plus on the road costs for the refreshed base model. This base model is a single cab, 2.2-litre turbo diesel XT variant. This pricing schedule does have the entry level BT-50 listing higher than many other rivals. For example, the new single-cab Nissan Navara starts at $19,490 plus on the road costs and the Mitsubishi Triton starts at $21,990. However, both these models are petrol, reducing the costs. While there is a petrol entry level BT-50 on the global market, sold in Thailand, North America and Saudi ...
... Arabia, according to managing director of Mazda Australia, Martin Benders there is no plan for this to be sold here.
According to Benders, most of the BT-50 customer use their vehicles in the country or are required to tow or travel long distances, so “diesel is ideal”.
The 2016 BT-50 Range:
Martin Benders did make the point that Mazda has a strong sales position of 4x2 models. He also confirmed that the dealers have had more success with these models historically. These models are “what our dealers know” but there is still an “opportunity in the 4x4 segment”. Benders pointed out that the BT-50 has fared better historically with the two wheel drive spec rather than the four wheel drive, in terms of sales share.
In the year to date 2015 sales figures, the 4x2 BT-50 variants account for 12.9 percent of the market share or 3474 units sold. However, the 4x4 variants occupy only 6.8 percent of the market share, but this is actually a higher number of sales at 6,014 units sold.
The Ford Ranger, the sibling to the BT-50, also lacks a petrol entry level variant. However, a 2.5-litre petrol variant was available when the current generation was launched in 2011. This information confirms that the marketplace does have a gap for an entry level petrol BT-50. While Mazda Australia has said that this model is not on the cards for our market, if consumer demand increases, who knows what will happen in the near future.
