How Safe Is Hair Transplant?

What is hair transplantation?
Hair transplant is a procedure in which a dermatological surgeon extracts hair from the donor area of the head and transfers it to the bald area of the head. It is a procedure that is typically performed in a medical clinic under local anesthesia. Hair transplantation procedure is a very sensitive procedure and it requires a lot of care and precautions. The surgery takes around 4-5 hours to perform and requires proper care post operation.
What are the possible side effects?
Hair transplant often leads to a number of Side effects and causes discomfort that are usually minor and clear up within a few weeks. This includes:
• Bleeding
• Infection
• Swelling of the scalp
• Bruising around the eyes
• Crust forms on the areas of the scalp where hair was removed or implanted
• Numbness or lack of sensation on the treated areas of the scalp
• Itching
• Inflammation or infection of the hair follicles
• Sudden loss of the transplanted hair, called shock loss, which is typically temporary
• Unnatural-looking ...
... tufts of hair
However these side effects are common as well as temporary. With proper pre and post operation care these side effects can be avoided or reduced.
How safe is the hair transplant procedure?
Hair replacement surgery is normally safe when performed by a qualified, experienced physician. However much of it also depends upon individuals, in terms of their physical reactions and healing abilities, and the outcome is never completely predictable.
Again in any surgical procedure, there is always a possibility of infection occurring. Also, Excessive bleeding and/or wide scars, may result from the procedures. But all of this can be avoided by selecting the right doctor and if proper precautions are taken.
In any hair transplant procedures, there is always a risk of grafts not taken. Although it is normal for the hair contained within the plugs to fall out before establishing regrowth in the new location, at times the skin plug dies and surgery needs to be repeated. At times, patients with plug grafts will notice small bumps on the scalp that form at the transplant sites. But, these areas can usually be camouflaged with surrounding hair. Also, when hair loss progresses after surgery, an unnatural, "patchy" look may result especially, in case the newly-placed hair lies next to patches of hair that continue to thin out. In such a scenario additional surgery may be required.
The most reliable method of finding a good hair transplant surgeon is to ask for recommendations from friends, relatives or colleagues who have undergone a hair transplant surgery. Once you have selected your surgeon, clear all your doubts and concerns with him and they should be satisfactorily answered prior to the procedure. If you feel comfortable with the surgeon and feel is he reliable then you can go ahead with the procedure
