Growth Mindset And Improvement Of Learning At School

Mindset is a recent concept in education and learning landscape. It is the basis of the belief systems within students, which determines success in academics and studies. The idea was introduced by Carol Dweck of Standford University. According to her, there are primarily two types of mindset: Fixed Mindset and Growth Mindset. People with fixed mindset believe that intelligence cannot be improved and they hardly try to put on their efforts. On the other hand, those with a growth mindset love learning and they enjoy working long hours solving tough tasks.
Students with growth mindset are the primary candidate for success in studies and in life. They are easier to teach because they put a lot of self-effort. They are motivated easily and they are characterized with grit. The character of grit is an essence to success in long-term goals. Researchers believe that it is a byproduct of growth mindset. It helps students to endure long hardship that is required to completion of tough study courses.
To cultivate growth mindset in students, teachers and educators should emphasis on the effort of students rather than ...
... their talents and smartness. The result that is accomplished with hard work and perseverance and strategies should be praised rather than highlighting the instantaneous outcomes through smart work. The best boarding schools in India could work forward in this direction intuitively. Students must be taught about the flexible nature of human mind and how using intellect help in developing the brain. Presenting students with tough assignments and challenging them to accomplish high goals helps them to harness perseverance. Making them to reflect how their hard work paid off is effective to develop growth mindset in them. For younger students, teachers could adopt interesting strategy, such as storytelling. The success stories of scientist, great leaders and heroes should be presented before them highlight the value of hard work.
Positive mindset is a key factor for development of cognitive and non-cognitive skills in students. Critical thinking, co curricular activities and adventure should be combined with the effort to develop growth mindset in students. Concisely, the approach of teachers should be such that they emphasize equally on academic and non-academic skills of students in the process to foster a positive mindset in them. Teachers are responsible to equip the coming generation with adequate knowledge so that they could prosper in future. Schools must teach students to develop a growth mindset through years of continuous efforts and long-term strategy.
