Teeth whitening gel is made up from the chemicals called Hydrogen Peroxide and Urea which when combined is called Carbamide Peroxide. Carbamide peroxide is also called urea peroxide, urea hydrogen peroxide, and percarbamide. Both these chemicals are bleaching agents and as such the procedure using these chemicals for dentistry applications is called teeth whitening or teeth bleaching.

In Use
When the teeth whitener is in the mouth it breaks down into the component parts, thus releasing the hydrogen peroxide to perform the bleaching process on the teeth. The chemical urea plays no active part in teeth bleaching, its sole use is to make the compound more stable. The component parts separate when water is applied.
There are several methods for using peroxide in teeth whitening from using custom made trays which can be filled with the gel to whitening pens with which the gel can be painted directly on the teeth.
In teeth bleaching anything from 10% up to 36% concentration is used.
