While the rainy season is not generally considered to the best time to travel, in India the monsoons are actually quite mesmerising. There are a number of places in the country that truly come to life during the monsoons. Visitors can enjoy refreshingly lush greenery and the romantic atmosphere that the rains bring with them. From the north to the south and the east to the west, there are some amazing destinations around the country that you can visit during the wet season. In fact, there are even special monsoon holiday packages that are designed to help you experience the magic of the monsoons. Here are some of the best places to visit during the monsoons in India:

North:
Jammu and Kashmir is one of the most beautiful places to visit in India. It is often referred to as a slice of paradise. With its towering mountains, stunning lakes and exquisite valleys, this northern state is a treasure trove of incredible vistas. While many people visit Kashmir during the summers, the second-most popular time to visit this destination is during the monsoons. Apart from its natural beauty, there are many monuments ...
... that you can visit here as well. Sonmarg, Gulmarg and Srinagar are some of the more favoured areas to spend the monsoons in Kashmir.

South:
Kerala is one of the best places to visit during the rains. The hill station of Munnar, especially is renowned for its beauty during the rains. In Munnar you can enjoy the experience of waking up to mist all around you. The tea gardens of this picturesque hill station don their brightest green during the monsoon, making for a delightful sight. In fact, the entire state, from its beautiful beaches to backwaters is absolutely enchanting during the rains.

East:
Though technically more towards the north-east than east, Darjeeling is one of the most beautiful places in the entire country to visit during the monsoons. Darjeeling is famous for enjoying unbelievably amazing views of Kanchenjunga or K2, the second-highest mountain in the world. While you may go there for these famed views, you’ll definitely want to spend time in Darjeeling simply for its mesmerising scenery. Its rolling hills and superb tea estates make Darjeeling monsoon holiday packages some of the most sought after in India.

West:
The coastal state of Goa in the Konkan region to the west of India is extremely popular during the monsoons. Generally known as a beach destination, many believe that Goa’s natural beauty is actually best enjoyed during the rains. Holidays in Goa during the monsoon are centred on long rides through the lush green countryside, visits to waterfalls and treks and hikes through nature parks.
