Boosting Company Morale

Learning how to keep your employees productive is a fulltime job in itself. Recognizing a peak or a valley in your company's morale adds up to good business savvy. The ability to read your employees and respond appropriately with a perk to boost sagging morale will keep your best people on the payroll.
Recognition is a Powerful Motivator
Fortunately for the company coffers, some of the most effective ways to uplift drooping shoulders are inexpensive as long as they are served with a big helping of sincerity. Let people know their efforts have been noticed. No one likes to feel alone in the vacuum of never-ending, thank-less tasks. Accompany accolades with a concrete reminder of the job well done; it will serve as a mnemonic of the appreciation and of the performance that earned it.
Promotional products can be purchased for pennies and engraved with the employee's name and a thoughtful phrase. Personalized post-it notes, coffee mugs, pens, key chains, eco-friendly shopping bags, lanyards, baseball caps, and stainless steel water bottles are but a few examples of practical items that can be stamped with ...
... a "thanks for your outstanding performance" and presented to the employee.
Rewards are more effective when they hold meaning to the recipient, so the same gesture may not work with everyone. Promotional products can be selected from a wide range of stock so take the time to choose a gift that will appeal to individual preferences.
Furthermore, if you can keep these points on your short list, you will have the head's up on positive company morale.
1. Show respect for your employees.
Safeguard their privacy. Refrain from public reprimands. Have an interest in or show consideration for their family life. While you may not be able to finance on-site child care, acknowledge the challenges employees with families have by showing consideration of these facts of life.
2. Share the decision-making process.
Allow your employees to have ownership of the decisions that directly affect their job. This gives them the opportunity for input and facilitates pride in their role because they have a personal investment in seeing it through to completion.
3. Provide for their well-being.
Actively conduct a safe and healthy work environment. Do what you can to respect on-the-job comfort. Keep work spaces clean, well-lit, free of unpleasant noise, well-ventilated and at a comfortable temperature for the current climate. Give ready access to water, washrooms and follow the guidelines for nutrition breaks. A good manager knows that people do fall ill upon occasion; try not to have deadlines so tight that a sick day here and there sets the whole operation askew.
4. Stand in the front line.
Share in the day to-day duties so the boss isn't perceived to be an oblivious commander in a crystal palace. Even though "the customer is always right", don't allow your employee to suffer the full brunt of an unreasonable client; stand in the front line and take some of the brunt yourself.
5. Be a good communicator.
Surrounding yourself with a great team means that you are a supportive spoke in your wheel of progress. Keep your employees abreast of changes to come, ask for their feedback, incorporate it where you can and let them know how the operation is going. Not only will this validate their input, but it will feed the collective mind with the same facts you have. Keeping everyone on the same page will tweak the operation of your business.
Company morale flows in ripples from the top down, the bottom up, and in waves from side to side. If the boss is unhappy, it quickly spreads throughout the office. If the employees are unhappy, their work suffers. Negative work ethics seem to travel faster than positive ones, so take control of your company. Make boosting morale part of your business plan. A well-oiled machine is far more effective than gritty, neglected one.
