The hill of Poggio Imperiale dominates the city centre of Poggibonsi with the imposing outside walls of the Medici Fortress. It was built in the early 1500s under the auspices of Lorenzo il Magnifico according to the project designed by Giuliano da Sangallo, although the interior urban plan was never built. Thanks to the archeological excavations, different settlement stages have come to light: from the buildings of the late ancient age to the huts of the Lombard village, from the remains of the Carolingian manor to the 12th -century castle, from the late-Medieval town planning to the attempts of Imperial revival, up to fortress of Lorenzo il Magnifico.
Tuscany is a territory particularly rich in archeological excavations thanks to its ancient history.
Many tourists visit each year this Italian region appreciated throughout the world above all for its excellent wines.
