Over the last few decades man has tried to use the power of the alternative sources of energy to develop it as a substitute for the non renewable sources of energy which are almost at an end now. Moreover constant use of these non renewable sources like fossil fuels has degraded the atmosphere the brought the world periliously close to extinction. Thus man is looking at new renewable sources of energy like the sun. harnessing even a fraction of the enormous power of the sun can end all worry of power for mankind for another century.

One of the earliest designed instruments to use the power of sun rays are the solar panels. These are a collection of a large number of photovoltaic cells or solar cells. A photovoltaic cell receives the photons of a light source such as the sun and converts it to electrical energy. A single photovoltaic cell can only give a minute quantity of power and hence a solar panel has thousands of photovoltaic cells connected together.
When several hundreds of such solar panels are stacked together they can harness the energy from the sun rays and produce enough electricity for any commercial ...
... or residential application. Usually these stacks of solar panels are termed as photovoltaic array. An inverter is also needed for these arrays.

However large scale uses of these arrays have not been developed yet and researchers are trying to come up with photovoltaic cells which can deliver more power. Solar panels are thus now mostly used in grid applications or on spacecrafts. In spacecrafts and space research they play a vital role
