Ever been curious about the history of furniture and where it all began? Maybe you are sitting in your beautifully appointed sitting room and while looking around start to wonder about the story behind the furniture you are using? This article is for all you curious minds out there who can satisfy your curiosity by reading on.

The use of furniture can actually be dated back to when the caveman used tree branches to balance his things; this can then be considered the start of the furniture history because the concept originated then. Furniture has been a part of the human life and dates back to the non-nomadic cultures when furniture was crafted out of stone. This evidence has can be seen in theriod and later in antiquity and was expressed in wall Murals found in Pompeii; in sculptures excavated in Egypt and samples found in tombs in Turkey.

Furniture is the collective term for all movable objects that support human activities and make it suitable or comfortable for living or working, and includes all types of tables, chairs, beds, desks, dressers, cupboards, etc. Furniture has evolved over the years and can ...
... be made from various materials that include wood, plastic, metal and other materials. The evolution of furniture has been region specific and you will find that every country has its own distinctive furniture styles.

From the dawn of civilization man has always sought a better quality of life and furniture building and use was part of this search. Some of the earliest examples of furniture were made by the Egyptians, considered crude by present standards; the furniture was primarily designed to make life easier and man succeed in doing just that.

Going by recorded history, you will learn that one of the first known pieces of furniture to be crafted was a throne; kings need a place to sit didn’t they? As man’s needs grew the basic furniture like tables and chairs were designed.

The making of furniture moved through the ages side by side with history and as a result we have the different periods of historical furniture that includes the Roman and Greek furniture, Renaissance furniture, Early American Furniture, 17th Century Furniture, 18th Century Furniture, Furniture of the Early 1900's, Chinese furniture, Asian furniture, 50s and 60s period furniture and modern furniture.

Today, furniture has come a long way and is big business - every single house boasts furniture, some more than others depending on an individuals status in life. For the ultra rich, there are stores that sell superior quality furniture, made from the costliest materials and elaborately designed and elegantly carved. There are shops that cater to every person’s tastes and budgets so you can always find what you are looking for.

Furniture can be classified into various categories such as seating, storage, surfaces, sets, sleeping, entertainment and other furniture. These broad classifications cover the whole range of furniture types from armoires and hat stands to sofas and chairs, beds and tables and a whole lot more.

As I mentioned furniture is big business and auction houses and specialty stores abound to cater to individual tastes. This is a very interesting subject and one can keep on writing but I hoped I have given you a clear idea of the evolution of furniture.
