Communication during warfare, ciphers and codes, come immediately to mind when one talks about code. However, a code is much more basic than that.

In my last post I had hinted at the fact that numbers are the most common forms of code. That is because a code is something that "represents" something else. For example, when we say "four" or write "4" it makes sense in practical life only when it is applied to something else. That is the reason why I said that numbers are codes.

The code-nature of numbers was recognized only slowly because often it is easy to invent something but it takes time to understand the nature and implications of the entity invented or discovered.

Today Number Theory has become a vast study in itself and one is discovering ever new things about the nature of numbers -- real numbers, imaginary numbers, complex numbers and so on. In turn, this discovery has been helping researchers to invent ever more complex systems of coding that they need to study the real world.

The real world is exceedingly more complex than one can imagine. Take for example the mathematical modeling of ...
... Traffic, that is used to develop roads, exits, and traffic-control lights. Here we are not talking of something like the flow of electrons which are controlled by rigid laws of physics, but rather about human beings each one of whom has a thinking of his own. This makes traffic patterns totally unpredictable or very difficult to predict in comparison to predicting electron trajectory.

However, the more complex uses of numbers can help to predict even what looks unpredictable. Complex form of coding is needed to make mathematical models of traffic in this case -- all a game of complex coding by numbers!!
