Prevx 3.0 Gets A Boost By Suverasu Virus
New Malware Threat Discovered By Small Ohio-Based Tech Firm
A small IT and Web Design firm located in Ohio stumbled upon a new malware threat named Suverasu. After careful inspection of this malicious file, it was apparent that the threat may very well have been created by the same company that offers its removal.
Prevx, a software development company out of the UK, who holds a primary offering of an antivirus product named Prevx 3.0, claims to have the solution to the Suverasu malware and they claim to have the exclusive solution as well. Quite an achievement, since Malwarebytes, Norton, nor has any other security firm identified the Suverasu threat to date. As a matter of fact, with a simple Google search of the term Suverasu or its filename Survasu.dll, there are only a few results found and they all are promotions of Prevx's solution to the threat.
What really gets the "red flags" raised is that upon researching Prevx, we discovered several major issues with the irony between Suverasu and the makers of its exclusive solution, Prevx 3.0. Aside from beautiful reviews in PC Mag and loads of content ...
... distributed all over the web to glorify this organization, there was just as much content to raise skepticism, at least in our eyes, on the motives of the Survasu threat.
The most alarming is that Jacques Erasmus, Director of Prevx's security team, is also a well documented hacker. "Ex Hacker" is what he calls himself, but we are likely to find that his hacker's days aren't as far in the past as he'd like us to believe.
We contacted the Prevx Team to find out what they had to say about the Suverasu threat and its correlation to their exclusivity. They responded by telling us that they are "proud to be the only firm to have discovered the virus so far and that in a few weeks we will see more firms reporting it". This sounded like a great discovery for such a small anti-virus firm, until we analyzed the Google SERPS again and noticed that Prevx had reported the threat on January 18th, 2009. Now, if they were the first to discover this threat and today is November 12th, 2009, then isn't it a little odd that no other security firm has identified it in the past 10 months? Think about it for a moment... yeah, that's what we thought as well. So, we replied with our skepticism and Prevx had nothing more to add to their "Christopher Columbus" claim.
What is even more ironic is that the release of the Prevx 3.0 anti-virus software was at the beginning of '09 and in great synchrony with the discovery of the Suverasu threat. Now, this wouldn't be the first time that we've seen major software launches follow the discovery of a new threat and it certainly wouldn't be the first time that both the creation of the threat and the discovery of the threat had a lot to do with the marketing of a product.
One can only question the irony in the facts here because at this time, Prevx has released gobs of content and gotten rave reviews throughout the major players like CNET and PCMag, but we're still skeptical and compel those interested in the Prevx 3.0 software to do your own due diligence and research this firm thoroughly because our findings all lead to a bad smell in the air.
