Traditional Cake Decorations
The most amazing thing about cakes is that they are loved by everyone and all. From young children to grownups alike, everyone loves biting into these baked delights whether at the dining table or at restaurants outside. The Oxford English Dictionary defines cakes as “An item of soft sweet food made from a mixture of flour, fat, eggs, sugar, and other ingredients, baked and sometimes iced or decorated.” Cakes are not only good for the palate but they can be real eye-catchers too when they are gloriously decorated. In fact when it comes to decorations, cakes are the most versatile food items in the world. Cake decorations are made from edible materials or food-safe plastics. They are usually placed on top or around the cakes. It usually involves covering the cakes with some form of icing and then using decorative sugar, candy or chocolate decorations to adorn them. But cake decorations can also be a simple coat of icing sugar or a bit of glaze over the top of a cake.
Icing decorations are made by either piping icing flowers and decorative borders. They are also done by molding sugar paste, fondant or marzipan flowers. ...
... Fondant is customarily used to cover cakes although they can also be used to create individual show pieces for cakes. Fondant is available in many different colors, and its initial form which is soft and easy to handle makes it easy into many different artistic expressions.
The origins of cake decorating can be traced back to the 17th Century from Europe. But the art truly took from in the 1840s when a French bakery wanted to increase the prices of the cakes by decorating them. During this time, with the advent of temperature-controlled ovens and the introduction of baking powder baking cakes had become much easier. The form and stability of the cakes also made them open to decorations and other presentations. The cakes began to take on decorative shapes which were adorned with icing in different patterns. Food colorings were also used to accent the frosting or the layers of cakes.
Cake decorations vary from occasion to occasion. The entire procedure of planning and decorating a cake is dependent on the type of festivities. The decorations are based on the theme or on individual preferences. They can be done to complement any ceremony whether it is a holiday, anniversary or a birthday. A decorated cake is also an ideal birthday gift as it can be personalized for the celebrant. And nowadays a lot of cake shops in Dubai provide a wide variety of decorated cakes for any occasion, and one can easily order them for any celebration.
