Why Employers Should Emphasize On Health And Safety Training
The subject of health and safety is as important to a worker as to the employer. A collaborative effort is needed to maintain safe workplaces. Every year, many cases of injury and death of workers are reported. Companies spend a lot of money in compensations of workers who have been injured in workplace. Health and safety training is critical in reducing the extend and severity of injuries and illnesses in workplace.
When workers undertake the training, they know how to follow the safety instructions, identify hazards, report cases of injuries, and use protective equipments when in workplace. A workplace that records increased number of worker’s injuries, illnesses, or deaths is likely to experience increased turnover. Workers can also be injured when they work in areas where there are hazards.
It does not have to be a machine or exposed live electrical wires, even a dented floor or spillage of liquids on floors can cause serious accidents. The millions of pounds spend by companies in compensating injured employees can be reduced when the workers are trained ...
... on health and safety.
Workers may have increased morale and productivity when they perform their duties in safer environments. Employers can benefit when the increased morale and productivity among workers. The cost of compensating injured worker can put pressure on finances of a company.
Businesses are required to train their employees on health and safety. These programs are intended to help workers understand their role in promoting safety in workplace and follow the laid down procedures to prevent or avoid hazards. Workers should be able to identify hazards and report them to the supervisors and managers.
Employers have a responsibility to protect their workers against hazards in workplace. Workers on the other side have a right to know about the potential hazards they may be subjected to and refuse to perform duties if they believe they are put themselves in danger. Workers also have a responsibility to perform duties safely when they are handling hazardous materials.
There are ergonomic hazards that occur when the work you handle or the body position you take when working puts strain on the body. Such hazards are usually difficult to identify since they do not cause immediate harm to your health. For example, when you do repetitive work, frequent lifting, or sit on improperly adjusted chairs and workstations, they may pose health and safety risks.
Chemical hazards are caused by exposure to chemical preparations such as gas, liquid, and solid hazardous materials in workplace. People who handle cleaning solvents and products, fumes, vapors, carbon monoxide, gasoline, and other flammable materials may be in danger if they do not take precautionary measures.
Biological hazards are posed by things that are biological in nature such as bacterial, virus, bodily fluids, blood, insect bites, bird dropping, and others. Poor work practices can create hazards, for example, when people operate unguarded machines, do not wear protective equipment, or they are unable to identify hazards. Having health and safety training can protect workers, reduce compensation cost, align with legal requirements or compliance issues, and increase productivity at workplace.
