Firstly, evaluate the current texture of your hair follicle. Assess its porosity, elasticity and see if there is any damage of shafts or cuticles before considering it for a chemical exposure. It is not difficult to relax curly hair. It is difficult to maintain it. While applying the straightening cream avoid the scalp of your head. Leave half an inch from the scalp and then apply the cream. Start from half an inch from the scalp till the tip of your shaft. Prior to using relaxers, care should be taken not to wash with shampoo as the chemical in them will not allow the relaxing to happen.

Apply the cream by taking few strands after strands and brush them with thin comb with close teeth. It is best to have a straightening expert to do it as she has the technical know how for straightening frizzy shafts. On coarse virgin hair, a strong straightening cream can be used but not on some one who has already got the straightening done before. There fore a prior testing of the strands is required to find out whether to use, strong cream, medium one or light cream. If yours is wavy and not really frizzy or rough then you must ...
... use a medium one or a light cream based on the elasticity of your strands. Its texture, elasticity, porosity should be assessed before treating them with a particular level of cream. Virgin strands can tolerate regular strength relaxers which have high alkaline content in them. Sodium Hydroxide is strong but has dramatic effect in softening your strands.

Testing them to see if they withstand the chemicals and also to determine which level of straightening cream to use is done in the following ways:

Your strand is pulled to determine the degree of elasticity

The other method is to apply a small quantity of relaxer in order to assess whether there would be any reactions to the chemicals.

And finger test

A good professional will also maintain detailed records of any chemical relaxing treatments. It may be performed on the hair and can use those written records to determine the best coarse of treatment suitable for such type.

Post treatment of such treated hair is very essential. Always apply a good portion of conditioner and massage your scalp. Leave your conditioner on your hair for ten minutes, apply only on the strands till the tip and not on your scalp. Or else your scalp will get oily soon!
