What a fascinating topic. It appears we're only just beginning to realise the potential of hypnosis, yet it's been around for hundreds of years. What follows is a quick overview of hypnosis through the years, and you may find yourself a little surprised by some of its applications.
Hypnosis as a term was coined by a man called James Braid in 1841, prior to which it had been called Mesmerism. The reason Braid felt compelled to change the name was because of new understandings of the way hypnosis really works. Students of Mesmerism thought that it was because of some magical knowledge or power they had, that people entered the trance like state. However, Braid discovered that it was not due to any magical power the Mesmerist possessed, but instead the internal mental process of the subject that caused the hypnotic state.
Emile Coue was one of the first people to create a book on self-hypnosis. His system was heavily influenced by Braids findings before him. The concept of hypnosis being a self-induced frame of mind, instead of one reliant on the all powerful hypnotist was now starting to become more plausible. What ...
... this meant was more people could now benefit from this learning to produce change within themselves.
Sigmond Freud who is well known for his theories in psychoanalysis, initially dismissed the value of hypnotherapy when writing some of his books. Following this rejection of hypnosis, a lot of academics dismissed it's use at the time. He changed his opinion of hypnosis later in life, unfortunately the views that were printed in his books had a larger impact in the minds of people during that time. It is thanks to the entertainers interested in hypnosis, that the art was kept alive at this time.
Then, in the mid-1900's Doctor Milton Erickson found a different way of doing hypnosis which has improved the results of many of today's hypnotists - it has become known as Indirect Hypnosis. This permissive style of hypnosis was very different to previous types of hypnosis; it has huge value for hypnotising patients who disliked the authoritative approach.
Also around the same period as Doctor Milton Erickson, a stage hypnotist, Dave Elman was showing anaesthesiologists a more traditional style of hypnosis. This type of therapy was cutting edge, and very efficient for anaesthesia and advanced analysis therapies. His rapid hypnotic methods are still employed by therapists today.
Ormond McGill died in 2005, a hypnotist who taught hypnosis to many people. Writer of the 'Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' and he was titled 'The Dean of American Hypnosis'. In combination with having the reputation of a an excellent therapist he was famous for his stage hypnosis exploits.
One of the most respected hypnotists of our generation, Gil Boyne passed away in 2010. A direct student of Dave Elman, Gill incorporated Dave Elmans insights and worked them towards a more complete hypno-theraputic system. Inspiration for the works of 'Transforming Therapies' which in 2014 has yet to be bettered in the area of hypnotheraputic-analysis.
