Information About Ginkgo
Ginkgo is a genus that consists of highly unusual non-flowering plants. It also has an extinct species known as Ginkgo Biloba that is regarded to be a living fossil. It is also known as maidenhair trees which are tall, slender, picturesque deciduous trees having fan-shaped leaves. It is native to East China, where it had been revered by various Buddhist monks and was planted near temples. Regarded as a "living fossil," it is the only remaining species that is now present in the earth of a large order (Ginkgoales) of gymnosperms used to exist in the Triassic period.
One important characteristics is that its form has not changed in millions of years, which is being revealed by fossils which are found to be widely scattered over Europe, North and South America, and Asia. The classification of ginkgo can be done in the division Pinophyta from class Ginkgoopsida of the order Ginkgoales. It belongs to the family of Ginkgoaceae.
