When watching ER, Chicago Hope, Private Practice or Grey's Anatomy, what was your impression on a physicians assistant? Probably due to the settings in the movie are always in hospitals, you can only imagine the PAs in a surgery room helping the doctors to monitor the heart rates, monitoring post-op patients and other things during the surgery process.

More commonly known as PA, it is actually very wide in the medical field. Unlike medical assistants, PAs often have a MD supervising them the whole day. One third of PAs found today are in the hospitals while the remaining are sent to nursing homes, school or college based facilities (if the school or college has a small clinic), community health centers, freestanding surgical facilities, rural clinics where the places are secluded, industrial settings, and correctional systems.

Wondering where else can a PA work at? There are a few settings where you may opt for.
General internal medicine and its subspecialties

Emergency medicine

Family and general medicine

General surgery and surgical subspecialties

Obstetrics and gynecology

Pediatrics ...

DermatologyIt is a wide field and there are a lot other medicine areas and specifications that a PA can work in. There's not really much to worry about when taking PA courses or programs. You may choose any medical field that you like and specialize in that field. You may also obtain a Masters Degree in this field and go further into the field that you are interested in (e.g. Dermatology) and become the PA for the dermatologist. You may even practice your field of specialties in the rural areas and help the rural patients in their skin problems.
