Hypnosis is really an intriguing subject. Hypnosis has been around for a very long time, yet it seems that we are just starting to understand it's potential. In this over view of hypnosis through the years, you might find yourself surprised by a few of the applications it has been used for.
In the year 1841 James Braid created the term Hypnosis, but prior to that it was known as Mesmerism. The reason Braid wanted to update the name was he had discovered a new understanding about the way hypnosis actually works. Practitioners of Mesmerism had believed they had some special knowledge or unique power, and that for this reason, people entered the special state. Braid realised that the operator did not hold any power, but instead the trance resulted because of what was going on in the subject's thoughts.
Among the earliest people to promote auto-suggestion was Emile Coue. This work really complimented the works of James Braid before him. The model of hypnosis being a self-induced state, rather than one reliant on power of the hypnotist was now becoming popular. The difference this made was that people could now learn how ...
... to harness this ability to enhance their lives.
Professor Sigmond Freud started using hypnosis to aid his method of psychoanalysis toward the end of the 1800's, unfortunately he didn't see the benefits of it. It was reported that, much later in life confessed that he definitely wouldn't have stopped using hypnosis, if he had known and understood the potential of it earlier in his career.
After Freud, Psychologist Milton Erickson developed a type of hypnosis which gave birth to NLP and influenced many modern hypnotists - it's known as Indirect Hypnosis. Indirect hypnosis was in stark contrast to previous types of hypnosis; it was most effective for hypnotising clients who struggled with more traditional approaches.
Circa the same time as Doctor Milton Erickson, a stage hypnotist, Dave Elman was showing dentists and doctors a more traditional take on hypnosis. Dave Elman taught a very direct method of hypnosis for pain control and hypno-analysis. Not surprisingly some of the approaches he used are still used for their reliable results.
Ormond McGill died in 2005, a hypnotherapist who had a profound influence on many hypnotists. He authored the 'Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' and he was titled 'The Dean of American Hypnosis'. Perhaps most famous for his stage hypnosis work, however he was also amazing as a hypnotic-analyist as well.
To the detriment of the world of hypnosis, in 2010 one of the most talented hypnotists of our time died, Gil Boyne. Gill did brilliant insights around the area of hypno-analysis, and expanded the approaches developed by Dave Elman immensely. He wrote the book 'Transforming Therapies' which in 2014 has yet to be bettered in the field of hypno-analysis.
The world today has so many valuable proponents in the area of hypnosis, Don Motton and Steven Jeffreys for example. With the arrival of the web, there has been an explosive development of techniques among hypnotists, and this has produced amazing results in the treatment of physical disease, such as cancer and multiple sclerosis, on top of the standard interventions areas of stopping smoking and losing weight.
