What an interesting subject. It seems as though we're just beginning to understand the potential of hypnosis, yet it's been used for a long time. The following is a quick overview of hypnosis through the years, and you might be quite surprised by some of its applications.
Hypnosis as a term was coined by doctor James Braid in 1841, but before that was known as Mesmerism. The reason Braid felt compelled to change the name was due to a new understanding in the way hypnosis actually works. The old practitioners of Mesmerism thought that it was because of some magical power or knowledge they held, that people entered the trance like state. James Braid uncovered that the Hypnotist did not hold any magical ability, but instead the state resulted through that which was happening in the subject's thoughts.
Emile Coue became one of the first people to create a manual on auto-suggestion. The work he did compounded the findings of Braid in previous years. The idea of hypnosis as a state that was self induced, rather than one dependent on power of the hypnotist was now becoming popular. The difference this made was anybody could ...
... now learn how to harness this learning to enhance their lives.
Professor Sigmond Freud who was famous for his discoveries in psychoanalysis, initially disregarded the effectiveness of hypnosis when formulating some of his books. Because of this slandering of hypnosis, a lot of academics dismissed using it. His opinion about hypnosis as an aid to therapy became more open as he learned more about it, sadly this evolved when he was older, at which time he was no longer writing. Thankfully it's because of the stage performers using hypnosis, that the art didn't die out during that time.
After Freud, Psychologist Milton Erickson began using a hypnosis style which has improved the results of many modern hypnotists - the style of Indirect Hypnosis. is often used for hypnotising subjects that struggled to undergo hypnosis.
What was seen as a very different style of hypnosis was being shown to medical and dental professionals during the same time period by Dave Elman. Dave Elman taught a very direct style of hypnosis for pain control and in the field of hypnotherapy. Not surprisingly a lot of his approaches are being taught for their fast results.
The late great Ormond McGill, often referred to as "The Dean, he wrote "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis and became published for his hypnotherapy, in which he excelled. Many great hypnotists of today have been influenced by his hypnotic and therapeutic methods. McGill died in 2005.
One of the most knowledgeable hypnotherapists of this generation, Gil Boyne was buried in 2010. A great admirer of Dave Elman, Gill took Stage hypnotist Dave Elmans breakthroughs and developed a more in-depth hypno-analysis method. Main contributor to the well heeled 'Transforming Therapies' which in 2014 has yet to be bettered in the field of hypnotheraputic-analysis.
