Looking At Hypnotherapy - Techniques For Newcomers
Hypnosis is a really interesting topic. Hypnosis has been used for hundreds of years, but it seems that we are only just beginning to comprehend it's power. In our quick summary of hypnosis through the years, you may find yourself surprised by a few of the conditions it has been used for.
In the year 1841 James Braid created the term Hypnosis, but prior to that it was known as Mesmerism. The main reason Braid felt compelled to update the name was he had discovered new understandings in how hypnosis actually works. Students of Mesmerism believed that it was down to some unique power or knowledge they held and practised, that caused the unique state. James Braid uncovered that the Hypnotist didn't have any unique power, but instead the trance resulted through that which was going on within the subject's mind.
Emile Coue became one of the first people to create a manual on auto-suggestion. The framework for his system was very much built on Braids work before him. The idea of hypnosis as a frame of mind that was self induced, rather than one reliant on the all powerful hypnotist was now starting to become more plausible. ...
... What this meant was that more people could now learn how to harness this method to improve themselves.
The psychologist Sigmond Freud who was famous for his discoveries in psychoanalysis, initially dismissed the usefulness of hypnosis when writing some of his books. Influenced by his slandering of hypnosis, a lot of therapists never considered it's use at the time. He massively changed his views about hypnosis later in life, alas the views that were printed in his books remained in the teachings of analysts during that time. For some time following this, the art of hypnosis was developed by stage operators.
In the middle of the last century Doctor Milton Erickson tailored a type of hypnosis which gave birth to NLP and influenced many modern hypnotists - the style of Indirect Hypnosis. is often used for hypnotising patients who has previously failed to accept hypnosis.
What was seen as a very different style of hypnotherapy was being taught to dentists and doctors during the same time by Dave Elman. Dave Elman taught a very traditional approach to hypnosis which was mostly used for pain control and traditional analysis. His rapid hypnotic methods are still used by practitioners today.
The author of 'The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' was Ormond McGill, also known as 'The Dean'. McGill was very well known for his excellent therapeutic work. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. The Dean passed away in 2005.
The driving force behind Transforming Therapy was Gil Boyne, who died aged 86 in 2010. Boyne was a student of Elman and Erickson's methods, and used these to fashion a therapy system used widely today. Many users of his system would contend that Gil Boyne was the godfather of reproducible hypnotherapy techniques.
At their fingertips, today's practitioners have much more availability to information than the therapists of old could even imagine. Many physical problems are being cured using hypnotherapy, incorporating the progress made with the help of modern technology. Some of the more standard treatments, such as smoking and weight loss are also enjoying more success. Because of the developments happening in hypnosis at present, the future looks bright for the followers of hypnosis.
