Ask most people who have completed a remodeling project to tell you about their experience, and their reply usually starts with an exasperated sigh and comment along the lines of: "Never again, you are not going to believe what happened to us when we were remodeling..." and there begin the tales of woe. True, remodeling projects can be fraught with problems is not thought out right, but there are a few ways in which you can avoid the common nightmares.

Have a Generous Timeframe

Building projects are not always completed on time. Most people underestimate the time it takes to complete different tasks. Often there are unforeseen delays, unexpected obstacles, shortages of materials, or inclement weather that can hold up the proceedings. What is frustrating is that even with careful planning it is not always predictable when, where or how these problems may surface. The best approach is to consult with your contractors and estimate how long it will take to complete the project. Then whatever the time frame they give you, add at least 50% on to it in your head. So if they say a project will take a month, assume it ...
... will take one and a half to two months. This way you will not get anxious and panicky if proceedings falling behind.

Have a Plan and Stick to It

Often, what starts out as a small project soon turns into a major overhaul. Before you know it you have overspent, are covered from head to toe in dust, and living out of the garage because your house is a giant construction site. One way to avoid this pitfall is to consult with remodeling experts before doing anything. By bringing them in at a ground level they can make suggestions, lay out an order the work should be done in, and give advice for successful remodeling before you start. They will be able to help you work out a plan that aligns with your budget and time frame, which in the long run could work out to be far more cost efficient, even including their fees. Once you have a plan, stick to it. This will save you many headaches.

Take Time to Research Ideas

There are so many magazines and television programs nowadays on home decorating that there are almost unlimited ideas to choose from. Many of these programs show cost effective ways to remodel in a way that reflects your unique style. Don't make rash or hasty decisions. Take the time to research styles, materials, and costs before you start on a project. What you want most may be way out of your budget, and that is not something you want to discover half way through a project. You may also find the idea you have simply won't work in a particular space or room. Once again this is where a remodeling professional opinion can prove to be invaluable.

Keep Styles Consistent to Avoid Additional Projects

If you are choosing to only remodel a certain area of your home, and do not plan at any time in the future to remodel other areas, then be careful to blend the styles of old and new. To illustrate this point: You may have a cottage style home and want a more modern feel about it. If you remodel your kitchen in chrome and metallic finishes just because you've seen a kitchen in this style elsewhere, think of how vastly it will contrast with the rest of your home. The chrome may look modern and sleek in the kitchen, but the room will stick out like a sore thumb. Rather than making your home look more modern it will date the rest of it and make it look even older. Most of the time you will end up having to remodel more of your home to get it balanced. If you do your homework properly and get professional advice, you can still modernize your kitchen in a way that it retains continuity with the style of your home.

Communicate with your Contractors

Build a relationship with your contractors from the start of a project. A good contractor should have an established track record and good references, and won't mind you checking up on them. Make sure that you communicate your ideas and expectations clearly and be firm on deadlines. Explain that you intend to check with them regularly on the project progress and want to be told of any hassles right away. Do this in a respectful way. Many trades' people take great pride in their work but are often not treated as professionals. It's a known fact that people work harder for people they like, so make an effort to always s be courteous, respectful, and professional in your dealings with contractors. This one simple thing can go a long way to ensuring a successful remodeling project.
