Such an interesting subject. It appears we're only just starting to realise the power of hypnosis, although it's been around for hundreds of years. The following is a brief overview of hypnosis down through the years, and you might be a little intrigued by a few of its uses.
In 1841 James Braid created the term Hypnosis, before that it was known as Mesmerism. Braid opted to change the name for good reason as there was now a more complete understanding of hypnosis. Practitioners of Mesmerism thought that it was because of some magical power or knowledge they held, which induced the trance like state. But, James Braid came to the realisation that it was not due to any power the Mesmerist held, but rather the reaction of the subject to the suggestions that developed the hypnotic trance.
Emile Coue was inspired to publish a manual on auto-suggestion. This work reinforced and complimented the findings of Dr Braid in previous years. More and more people now explored hypnosis through the eyes of a participant, instead of one reliant on the hypnotist.
In the twilight of the 19th century, The psychologist Sigmond Freud ...
... did some work with hypnosis to see if it could compliment his psychoanalysis work, however disregarded it and felt it had no value. He was reported as saying later in his life, if he understood the correct way to use hypnosis in his earlier career, as he did toward the end of his career, he wouldn't have stopped using it.
Psychologist Milton Erickson 1901 - 1980 began working with a method of hypnotherapy known as indirect hypnosis, which is still referenced by many hypnotherapists today. is known for hypnotising patients that found it hard to accept hypnosis.
Dave Elman, who became a massive influence on hypnosis around the same time, used a much more authoritative method than Doctor Milton Erickson. Elman is respected for some of the fast and no-nonsense methods, a lot of which are commonly used today. Mr Elman specialised in lecturing dentists and doctors in hypnotic anaesthesia, his methods are still being used to this day, to help with pain-free childbirth and hypno-analysis.
A therapist who taught hypnosis to many people was Ormond McGill, who passed away in 2005. Best known as 'The Dean of American Hypnosis', he published several books about stage hypnosis. In conjunction to being known as a respected therapist he was famous for his stage hypnosis contributions.
A major contributor to hypnotherapy approaches used today, Gil Boyne passed away in 2010. A student of Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, Gill incorporated Dave Elmans innovations and developed a complete hypno-theraputic system. He wrote the well heeled 'Transforming Therapies' which is regarded as a classic in the area of theraputic analysis.
At the moment there are too many outstanding contributors in the field of hypnosis to mention. Nowadays the internet has given rise to a massive growth in communication between hypnotists. This has yielded advancements in the areas of physical illness such as migraines and diabetes in conjunction with the traditional interventions, like smoking and weight loss.
