Being a traveler is, on the whole, safe—providing you take reasonable precautions about where you go and how you act yourself. Some parts of any country or city are more risky than others, just as some cities and countries are more unsafe than others.

Here are the 10 DOs and 10 DON’Ts that you must keep in mind every time you travel abroad:

10 DON’Ts

Don't bring and flash huge sums of money, nor exchange cash at fishy-looking places or with people on the street.

Don’t look like a vacationer by getting dressed like one, looking lost or checking a map in the public area.

Don’t walk with a bag hung insecurely over one shoulder, and you must keep your bag on the opposite side of you from the road to expect a robber on a bike from stealing it.

Don’t bring a knapsack that looks like luggage.

Don't go to the dangerous places, or walk in unaccustomed, remote or dimly lit zones, especially at night.

Don't leave your essential items such as iPhone and passport in public view;

Don't drive an evident rental car, the more ordinary the better; you must keep maps and ...
... travel flyers hidden in the glove compartment.

Don't park anyplace but on a well-lighted area, don't leave important things in vision and you must lock them in the trunk, and don’t get hitchhikers.

Don’t keep your car and hotel or house keys on the same key ring.

Don’t keep money, jewelry, medicine or other essentials in your baggage, and never leave behind your luggage unattended, even if for a short time.

10 DOs

Do be wary of your environment, and watch for doubtful individual or cars.

Do lock up important things you are not carrying with you in a safe in your room or use you must use your hotel’s safe-deposit box services to keep them; and always lock the windows and doors of your hotel room when strolling around the city.

Do use money substitutes like the traveler's checks or credit cards, and only bring as much money as you instantly need.

Do make a reminder of your passport number; in case it gets stolen or lost knowing your number will quicken in getting a replacement.

Do create a note of your credit-card numbers and the contact number to get in touch in case you have to report if it’s stolen and cancel it.

Do place a band around your baggage as a protection against pilferage while in travel; luggage locks are no boundary to an expert bandit.

Do dress properly for your environment as much as you can; looking more like a homegrown makes you less of a victim than looking like a real tourist.

Do travel with friends while exploring or shopping; there is security in numbers.

Do keep car doors locked and windows rolled up when driving.

Do be attentive for played disturbances, like someone hitting into you, spilling a drink on you, causing a noisy commotion or dropping something in front of you; an accomplice can rob your valuables and leave while you are temporarily preoccupied.

Therefore, don’t become a tourist offender and travel safe and sound.
