What a fascinating subject. It seems as though we're only just starting to realise the power of hypnosis, although it's been around for a long time.In our quick summary of hypnosis through the years, you might find yourself surprised by a few of the applications it has been used for.
Hypnosis as a term was introduced by a man called James Braid in 1841, but before that was called Mesmerism. Braid opted to update the name because he now had a better understanding of hypnosis. The old practitioners of Mesmerism thought that it was down to some unique knowledge or power they had, that caused the state of mesmerism. However, Dr Braid soon realised that it wasn't because of any power the Mesmerist held, but instead the reaction of the subject to the suggestions that caused the hypnotic trance.
One of the earliest people to work on self-hypnosis was a man called Emile Coue. The work reinforced and complimented the works of James Braid in the years before him. People now began to regard hypnosis as a self induced state, rather than a state reliant on the hypnotist.
Sigmond Freud started using hypnosis to supplement ...
... his ground breaking work on psychoanalysis coming to the latter part of the 1800's, surprisingly he disregarded it as having little value. He is quoted saying later in his career, had he understood as much about hypnosis at the start of his career, as he did toward the end of his life, he would have never stopped using it.
In the middle of the last century Doctor Milton Erickson created a hypnosis style which is still exciting many modern hypnotists - it's known as Indirect Hypnosis. This gentle kind of hypnosis was completely different to previous types of hypnosis; it was most effective for hypnotising patients who found it difficult to undergo hypnosis.
A huge contributor to hypnosis in the mid 1900's was Dave Elman, whose method was much more direct compared to Doctor Milton Erickson. Elman was well respected for his rapid and no-nonsense solutions, many of which are still used today. Mr Elman specialised in lecturing dentists and doctors in hypnotic anaesthesia, his methods are still used to this day, to help with painless childbirth and traditional analysis.
A therapist who had a major influence on many hypnotists was Ormond McGill, sadly passed in 2005. Known to many as 'The Dean of American Hypnosis', he wrote many books on stage hypnosis. Respected worldwide for his stage hypnosis work, however it must be said he was also innovative as a therapist as well.
A major contributor to therapy and analysis used today, Gil Boyne died in 2010. A direct student of Dave Elman, Gill took Dave Elmans insights and formed a highly advanced hypno-analysis method. He wrote the well heeled 'Transforming Therapies' which is regarded as a classic in the field of theraputic analysis.
Currently there is an incredible surge of talented practitioners sharing their knowledge. Developments in the internet has spawned a definite increase in communication among practitioners. This has yielded progression into the helping of physical illnesses such as cancer and multiple sclerosis on top of the standard applications, like weight control and giving up smoking.
