What an interesting subject. It seems as though we're only beginning to understand the power of hypnosis, yet it's been used for a long time.In our quick summary of hypnosis through the years, you may be intrigued by some of the applications it has been used with.
Hypnosis as a term was coined by a man called James Braid in 1841, before that was called Mesmerism. Braid opted to update the name for good reason as he now had a more complete understanding of what was happening when someone used hypnosis. In Mesmerism, practitioners believed they had some special knowledge, and that because of this, people became entranced. But, Braid soon realised that it wasn't due to any magical power the Mesmerist possessed, but instead the reaction of the subject to the suggestions that caused the mesmeric state.
Emile Coue became inspired to write a book on self-hypnosis. His approach was very much built on Braids work before him. People now began to regard hypnosis through the eyes of a participant, rather than one controlled by the hypnotist.
The well known psychologist and author Sigmond Freud once labelled hypnotherapy ...
... as having little value. This set back the experimentation with hypnosis during that period. He changed his opinion of hypnosis as he saw other peoples work with it, but the views that were printed in his books stuck in the minds of people at the time. It is thanks to the magicians interested in hypnosis, that it was kept alive at this time.
In the middle of the last century Milton Erickson found a type of hypnosis which is still exciting many modern hypnotists - the style of Indirect Hypnosis. This permissive kind of hypnosis was in stark contrast to previous types of hypnosis; it has huge value for hypnotising people of a very analytical nature.
Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, was a major figure in hypnosis around the same time, had a completely different way than Doctor Milton Erickson. Dave Elman is remembered for his fast and powerful interventions, which are still used today. He specialised in lecturing doctors and dentists in hypnotic pain control, his methods are still cutting edge even to this day, for hypnotic childbirth and traditional analysis.
The late great Ormond McGill, was referred to as "The Dean, he wrote "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis and was also well known for his hypnotherapy, in which he excelled. Many great hypnotists of today have been influenced by his hypnotic and therapeutic methods. McGill died in 2005.
The founder of Transforming Therapy was Gil Boyne, who passed away in 2010. A great admirer of Dr Milton Erickson and Dave Elman, Gil Boyne created a therapy system used widely today. There are those who would contend that Mr Boyne was this centuries innovator of analytical hypnotheraputic techniques.
In the present day the hypnotist has greater access to information at their fingertips than could be learned in a lifetime. Information sharing across the internet has yielded unusual results in areas like helping cancer, asthma, allergies as well as a lot of other problems people face. The more standard interventions, for example quitting smoking and improving eating habits are also enjoying more success. Hypno-analysis has never had a more exciting time, as it's becoming more accepted around the globe.
