How Are Corrugated Boxes Made?

These boxes are used for various purposes right from electronic gadgets, mobile phone, dish washers, machine parts, laptops and personal computers to some of the simple eatables that comprises fruits, pizzas, veggies that are packed in these boxes during the transport. The main benefit of these is that they are eco-friendly and are designed to be strong and can be recycled.

Presently these are becoming highly common and are used in various industries. But do you know from where these boxes are coming from, how they are made and what is the manufacturing process? In literal terms, behind the simple and convenient corrugated boxes there is tedious manufacturing process that lies unrevealed. The materials used in manufacturing are shipped in bundles and are made in specialized industries that are called box plants.

These are made from one and two layers of flutes and liner. But the entire thing rest upon, how strong the box ought to be. If a strong box is required then one or two layers of liner and flutes are being used. These boxes come in different types as in single faced corrugated board, single walled corrugated boards, and triple walled corrugated walled, triple board corrugated boards and double walled corrugated boards. These boards are manufactured under various types of corrugated box making machines arranged in a series which are known as corrugating line.

Most of the manufacturers make use of different layers, ideally a three layered corrugated board that is pre-heated and is steamed to a temperature up to 100 degree Celsius. This heating melts the natural elements of the board and makes it convenient to form flutes. Further there is long sheets of papers unwinding from rolls and are called webs. These webs are designed between a pair of gear like cylinders which are then called as corrugating rolls. Hereafter glue is applied at the tips of these flutes and is exposed against flat sheets called liners. Here it forms a single faced web. Once again these exposed flutes of the single faced web are glued and constrained with a second layer of liner. The process is repeated again and again depending upon the strength of the box that is required.

Once the layers are ready they are then upheld together with the help of a glue to give a desired shape and size. The last step is to convert them in to corrugated boxes where converting machines are brought in to use. Few machines that are used are Die-cut machines and Flexo-folder gluers.
