North Carolina is a state in the southeastern portion of the United States of America, on the Atlantic Seaboard. Georgia and South Carolina are located south of North Carolina, Tennessee is located west of North Carolina, and Virginia is located north of North Carolina. It is a medium-sized state, with its total land area of 139,509 square km (53,865 square miles) making it the 28th largest state in the Union. Its population is quite large at over nine million, making it the tenth most highly populated state in the country.

North Carolina is an impressive place to visit because its intriguing landscapes offer the visitor plenty of opportunities for fun and adventurous outdoor activities. Hiking, skiing, mountain climbing are easily accessible in the Blue Ridge mountains and Great Smokey mountains in the western region of the state. You can also experience a bit of Appalachian culture and music in this area.

... long stretches of pristine secluded beaches to relax on. This coastal area is also important to aviators, since this is the birthplace of flight, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

In the center of North Carolina lies the Piedmont region, which consists of mostly flat farming land and is the seat of most of NC's major towns and cities. Visitors from out of state or out of country aren't likely to see this region as the main attraction of their visit, but will probably pass through and spend a little time in Raleigh or Charlotte. Because Raeligh is the state capital, it features a handful of political and cultural sites that give visitors a reason to spend a little time there while passing through.

The Great Smokey Mountains National Park in the western region of the state is the one must-see attraction that I recommend. It is the state's most popular national park and is full of splendid natural wonders.
