DVI cables are also known as true digital video cables. They are used for true digital connection between the electronic components. The DVI cables are generally used to connect an LCD monitor and a video card. The video cards created are able to create a digital output. Using a DVI-D cable, the process of receiving the digital output is very quick and of high quality visual.

DVI-A cables are also known as high resolution analog cables. They transmit a DVI signal to an analog display unit. A CRT monitor is more commonly used on HD televisions. Due to loss of data in the conversion process of digital to analog, the output given by DVI-A cables is not as good as DVI-D cables. But, in comparison with VGA output, the output of DVI-A is better.

The cables used for transmitting between two devices in either digital to digital format or analog to analog format are DVI-A cables. But, make sure that these cables are not capable of connecting the dissimilar devices like digital to analog or analog to digital.

DVI digital and DVI analog formats are not interchangeable. This means that DVI-D cables cannot work on ...
... analog system and DVI-A cables cannot work on digital system. So, ensure the format of the two devices for which DVI cable is purchased. Only the equipment with a DVI port labeled as DVI-I is capable of accepting both DVI-A and DVI-D signals.

Now, if you want to check which DVI cable you are currently using, then just read the manual for the devices that you are connecting. You can get an idea even by looking at the DVI cable.
