DVI stands for Digital Video Interface which is a video connector specially designed by the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG). They aimed at providing the best picture quality display devices such as LCD screens and digital projectors to the customers.

DVI uses the data format which is based on the Panel Serial format that uses Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS). There are four twisted pair of wires used in a single DVI, each with a color code of red, green and blue and one of them is a clock signal to transmit 24 bits per pixel. This clock signal is virtually similar like that of the analog video signal. The picture is sent line by line electronically with blanking intervals separating each line and frame and packetization. There is no compression in DVI and if required to transmit the changed part of an image, then the only option is to retransmit the entire frame once again.

The maximum possible resolution for a single DVI is 2.6 megapixels for 60 Hz. Therefore, the connectors are provided with an option to connect the second link if the requirement of the resolution is more than 2.6 megapixels. ...
... Its specifications are limited to the cutoff point of each link at 165 MHz. every display mode can use a single link if they require less than this whereas, those which exceed the set limit, get switched to the dual link mode. DVI is the only standard which uses both digital and analog transmission options in the same connector.
