Oils are complex chemical compounds- essentially organic in nature, with high hydrogen and carbon content- which are viscous liquids at normal temperatures. Oils cannot be mixed with water but different types of oils can be mixed with each other. The term oil can refer to mineral oils, organic oils and essential oils. Mineral oils, also called petrochemicals, are not found to have any health benefits and are mainly used for generation of energy.

Organic oils are found in the bodies of organisms, and are produced by organic processes. The scientific term for such oils is lipids and includes fats, waxes, cholesterol, steroids, etc. Certain organic oils, known as omega 3 oils, have health advantages. Essential oils are extracted from plants and are called essential in the sense that it carries a distinctive essence of the plant from which it was extracted. They are used in perfumes, bath products, cosmetics, incense and house cleaning products, and as flavours for food. Most common essential oils are distilled. These include lavender water, orange blossom water, rose water, lemon balm, eucalyptus oil, etc.

... oils are specially useful for the health industry. Essential oils are commonly used in aromatherapy, which is a form of alternative medicine. The aromas of essential oils are supposed to have healing effects, while the oils themselves are used in ancient traditional medicine, specially as antiseptics. Manufacturers of essential oils claim that the benefits of essential oils range from skin treatments to cancer. However, because of their concentrated form, essential oils should not be directly applied to the skin in their undiluted form, since this causes irritation and allergies. Instead, essential oils ought to be blended with a vegetable-based base or carrier oil like olive, almond, grapeseed and hazelnut.
