Root Canal Treatment Procedure
Tooth decay is one of the leading causes of tooth loss. If the decay becomes severe enough that no other treatment can be done to save the tooth, an extraction will be done to ensure that the infection and damage will not spread to other teeth and to the gums. However, if the affected tooth can still be saved from extraction, a root canal procedure is given to nurse the tooth back to its proper use and appearance.
A root canal treatment involves the removal of the infected tooth part (the tooth pulp) so the damage and infection does not spread to the surrounding tissue. The root treatment is usually required to save a tooth that has been damaged with dental abscess, or if the tooth pulp is infected and extensively decayed. The root canal is considered as a last resort to save the tooth from extraction, to prevent a patient from suffering the effects of tooth loss. This treatment is also done to provide permanent pain relief, since a badly decayed tooth is often accompanied with extreme pain.
Root Canal Procedure
The infected tooth and the area immediately surrounding it ...
... will be numbed using a local anesthetic, to ensure that the patient will not feel any pain during the procedure. Additional treatment options for nervous patients can also be provided to keep the patient free from anxiety before and during the treatment.
If dental abscess is present, the pus will need to be drained first before the root canal treatment can proceed.
A hole in the tooth will be made using a dental drill, to access the inner tooth part (the pulp).
All of the infected and decayed parts of the tooth pulp will be removed to eliminate the infection, and also to make sure that the tooth remains protected from further damage.
The root canals are cleaned and will be filled temporarily to allow the treated tooth enough time to recover. If the infection has spread beyond the tooth pulp, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the issue before the permanent filling is placed.
After the treated tooth has completely recovered, a permanent filling material is placed in the root canals, which will then be sealed to protect the tooth from future infections. The tooth can further be protected and restored by using a dental crown, which covers the treated inner tooth parts and also restores the healthy appearance of the previously damaged tooth.
