Golfing Stars Of India By Golfingindian

With almost 185 years since the 1st Golf Club was established in India, Golf as a sport has gained great popularity. It was the year of 1829 when India was blessed with The Royal Calcutta Golf Club which was established during the British Empire. With the British rule in India, this sport was mainly dominated by their players. The first glimpse of an Indian making a mark in Golf was seen in the years 1945, 1947 and 1948 where the legendary IS Malik finished as the runner up. This was then converted into success by Mohinder Bal in 1949, when he became the first champion of the All – India Amateurs. The period 1945 – 1960 holds some unique records in our Indian golfing history, with IS Malik, Mohinder Bal winning some great championship titles.
With the over flowing talent in the Indian youth is turning towards golf, not merely as a sport but also as a career. This transition has been brought about by some of these immensely talented Golfers.
1) Jeev Milkha Singh:
Born to Indian Olympic athlete Milkha Singh and Nirmal Kaur, this great Indian professional golfer started his golfing career in the year 1993, ...
... where he won the Southern Oklahoma State Open. From there on he has given glory and fame to our country by being the first Indian- International golfing star. He was the first player from India to join the European Tour in 1998. And during this tour he won four events which made him the most successful Indian on this tour.
Achivements:
He has won many tours and championships like the Volvo China Open, Asian Tour, Barclays Singapore Open and Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.
He was the 3rd Indian golfer to receive the Arjuna Award in 1999. And in the year 2007 he won the Padma Shri.
In the year 2006 he became the Asia’s number one Golf Player.
2) Shiv Kapur:
1982 born this star had a knack for playing golf since his early days. He polished his golfing skills at Delhi Golf Club. He shot to fame in 2000 when he dominated the Malaysian Amateur Open & Indian Amateur Open. Then the year 2002, 20 years after India won Gold medal at the Asian Games in Korea, Shiv Kapur was the epitome behind this success. 2006 was a great year for Kapur as he won the British Open. In the same year he was tied fifth at the Johnnie Walker and top 20 on six occasions at the Barclays Singapore Open.
Achivements:
2000 -Indian Amateur Open & Malaysian Amateur Open.
2002 – Asian Games Individual Gold Medal.
2005 – Volvo Masters of Asia.
3) Anirban Lahari:
Born in the year 1987, he plays The Asian Tour. He joined this tour in the year 2008. His first victory came to him in the year 2011 at Panasonic Open. The he won the SAIL – SBI Open in 2012. Also gained great success on the PGTI, where he won 9 events on Merit in 2009.
His big break was when he qualified for the Open Championship at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lancashire.
Achivements:
2009 - Haryana Open, BILT Open.
2010 - PGTI Players Championship.
2011 - Aircel PGTI Players Championship (Tollygunge and Panchkula) & Panasonic Open.
2012 - SAIL – SBI.
4) Gaganjeet Singh Bhullar:
Born in 1988, Bhullar was India’s number one amateur professional in 2004 and 2006. Being the part of various tours and Championships he has won 1 Amateur and 15 Professional Tours.
Achivements:
2005 – World Junior Masters Championship.
2009 – PGTI Players Championship (Panchkula and Aamby valley), Asian Tour (Indonesian President Invitational). He was the youngest Indian to win the tour, DLF Masters.
2010 – Asian Tour International, PGTI Players Championship.
2011 – Gujarat Kensville Challenge, Bangladesh Open, PGTI Players Championship, Aircel PGTI Players Championship.
2012- Yeangder Tournament Players, Venetian Macau Open.
2013 – This was one of the most important years for Bhullar as he received the prestigious Arjuna Award. He won his 5th Asian Tour (Indonesian Open).
These Ace Golfers are an inspiration for our new generation. It is sure that this sport shall be continued with great success even in the coming years. These golfing stars have broken the perception that this sport is only for the elite class. Today India has many Golf Clubs, Golf Courses and Tournaments. From 1829 to 2014, Golf has made a mark as sport in India and has gained the much awaited popularity as cricket today.
