Punk - A Global Phenomenon

Punk has really emerged as a global phenomenon today with the use of internet and mainstream entertainment options like movies and television. However, this style of rock music has gone through various changes from its inception till date. You can find traces of punk subculture in the late 1970's in the United States of America and the United Kingdom from where this form of art and subculture moved into different parts of the world and received global recognition.
Punk has always played an important role in the formation of punk aesthetics and they drew inspirations from many contemporary writers and musicians who protest again the social problems of the society like social alienation and personal problems of an individual.
Even today, punks prefer to look distinctive from the others and their music involves an angry confessional lyrics with hard and fast beats that would talk about the current problems and issues faced by individuals and at times they are anti-government too. Detroit, Boston and New York City remain the base of the punk music from early times though it has now gradually moved to different parts ...
... of the globe.
With the advent of internet, punks decided to gain quick momentum and spread their music across the United States of America and United Kingdom to other countries where punk music was still in initial phase. Gradually punk music moved into Africa and they came up with their own version called Afro-punk. Punk scene became more popular in Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, it also spread to Socialist Republic of Slovenia, Socialist Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Belgrade and Adriatic coast of Croatia. Some of the early punk bands that influenced punk rock in these countries are Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Ruts and New York Dolls.
Punk also became a huge hit in countries like Australia where they began playing off-shoots of punk music and some of the early pioneers in Australia were The Saints. However, it was only in around 1980s when punk music became popular throughout the Australia and more punk bands like The Last Words and Thought Criminals emerged into limelight.
Spain witnessed the invasion of punk music soon after they got independence from the fascist dictatorship of General Franco. The early punk scenes had people like workers, unemployed individuals, petty criminals and scroungers who were getting into the punk music in Madrid to voice out their feelings. Punk music soon spread into Belgium and other parts of Europe too.
