Satta Matka - A Popular History Of Indian Form Of Gambling
Gambling may not be the best thing to resort to but its popularity cannot be ignored. The level of excitement, fun and entertainment apart, it also opens up chances to earn huge money in a short time span without putting up many efforts for the same. While casino gambling is the trend in western hemisphere it is Satta Matka that constitutes its Indian form.
What is Sattamatka?
Basically Sattamatka is a specific form of lottery that was prevalent long back but started in its present form in the city of Mumbai back during the years 1960s. However in different form it was present and was very much a part of Indian gambling culture in nomenclature like Ankada Jugar. With the growth of the popularity of matka in Mumbai, the syndicate came to existence that was pioneered by Kalyanji Bhagat and also by Rattan Kahtri.
Peep Into History:
It was way back in the year 1962 that Kalyanji Bhagat started the Worli Matka that was introduced with some modifications in rules by Rattan Khatri in the year 1964. While Kalyan matka ran all days a week while the later ran only five days excluding Saturday and Sunday. ...
... The form of gambling was welcome means of entertainment and relaxation for worker class people many of whom worked in the cluster of textile mills in and around Mumbai. Since Central Mumbai was the textile hub of the country, the form of gambling quickly turned into matka hub.
Flourishing Business:
In the next two decades during 1980s as well as in 1980s matka became one of the flourishing businesses. The business expanded so much with thousands of aspirants looking for matka results that it turned out to be an affair of over Rs.500 crores per month. That was also when disaster struck the matka world with a massive crackdown by the Mumbai Police on the matka dens. In result the dens were shifted to peripheral areas of the city instead of the city center. Later the business spread to other states in India like Rajasthan, Gujarat and others. Punters who were accustomed to satta matka diverted their attention to other forms of gambling and even sports betting. Number of bookies and punters that crossed two thousand marks in 1995 has now declined to just over three hundred only. The turnover has also dwindled from massive 500 crores to modest 100 crores in recent times.
Satta King and Matka King:
No information about satta matka can be complete without referring to the satta king Kalyanji Bhagat and matka king Rattan Khatri. A farmer from Ratadia in Kutch, Kalyanji migrated to Mumbai (Bombay at that time) in the year 1941 and became a grocer. His fortune changed when he started pioneering matka gambling in the 1960s on cotton rates and their fluctuations. Rattan Khatri on the other hand controlled the illegal gambling network throughout the country till the end of 1990s but is now retired to seclusion.
