According to the majority of high visibility protective clothing manufacturers, the term protective clothing refers to protective clothing, goggles, helmets and other garments and equipment which is specifically designed to protect the person wearing the high visibility clothing from a variety of injuries. Safety clothing can be designed to protect the wearer from electrical, physical, heat, biohazards, chemical and airborne matter which may come into contact with the wearer's body. People might wear high visibility protective apparel for a variety of reasons which might include: recreational activities, sports and job-related pursuits. The term of protective clothing is an umbrella term for a variety of different guards, pads, masks, shields and other forms of protective apparel which is designed to protect the wearer.
It is generally accepted that the main purpose of protective clothing is to reduce the risk of the wearer of the apparel being harmed through work or recreational activities. It is generally accepted that protective clothing is needed, if not essential, when hazards which might threaten the health of the person.
To be classified as High Visibility Clothing, the item in question must create a protective barrier between the wearer and the hazardous environment which they are working in. High Visibility Clothing must not create any unnecessary discomfort or prevent the wearer from carrying out their work. If the clothing prevents the wearer from undertaking their usual activities safely, then the High Visibility Clothing is more likely to hinder the wearer and, in some extreme cases, the poorly-designed clothing might even cause death or injury. If the equipment has been designed correctly, the risk to the wearer should be minimized. Therefore, the wearer should be able to be confident of being safe and healthy at all times, however hazardous their work might be.
Whilst there will always be some hazards involved in certain lines of work, the use of appropriate protective clothing will ensure that the employee's life is not in danger at any time. Whilst some forms of protective clothing will indeed protect the wearer more than others, it is of the utmost importance that the wearer only wears clothing which is appropriate for the duties which they're carrying out. Some protective clothing companies seek to eradicate the hazard rather than minimizing it. Whilst manufacturing companies might be able to prevent danger to the lives of an employee by making the equipment safer, many people have found it far easier to simply ensure that all safety apparel is of the highest possible standard. Whilst for some, a pair of gloves might suffice when it comes to protective clothing , for other people, a full body suit is necessary, complete with helmets and air ventilators.
