Nollywood: Nigerian Movies Has Come Off Age
Camera! Lights! Action!
Movie location words swiftly used by the movie industry in any English speaking country (at least that I am sure) and Nigeria is not left behind. The movie industry didn’t start last year or in the 90’s as many are quick to point out. It actually has a rich cultural and historically background from the early 50’s when Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the then Leader of the Western Region in the old Parliamentary/Republican Nigeria.
The moment he established the first television station, it became also imperative that movies and local content be generated and thus gave birth to the first locally produced movies by the likes of Hubert Ogunde, Moses Olaiye, AdeLove and a host of theatre practitioners.
It didn’t generate so much of stardom and star status as today’s presently nomenclature Nollywood has but that was the bed rock on which Nigerian movies past, present and future would be predicated upon.
Today, Nollywood is the second biggest movie industry in the world after Bollywood, the Indian counterpart in terms of movies produced annually. That is however not all that is about ...
... Nigerian movies. The quality has sporadically improved, (not as that of Hollywood but very significant, especially when you consider and compare it to the Home Video format that started Nollywood in the early 90’s. Producers and Directors alike are taking ingenious ways to source for funds to get the best quality scripts, visuals and acting. Movies like ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’, 'October 1st', 'Phone Swap' and many more are worldly acclaimed and some have garnered awards nationally and internationally.
Nigerian movies industry, Nollywood has really come off age indeed!
