Due to an increase in the amount of people that desire hair removal, the number of methods of hair removal has increased as well. Before, there was only old fashion plucking where hair was forcefully pulled out of the follicle. However, now there are many less painful, and still some painful, ways of removing unwanted hair. Hair removal techniques are usually divided into two categories, physical methods and chemical methods. Physical methods include plucking, shaving, waxing, and threading. Chemical methods include depilatories, laser treatment, and electrolysis.
Plucking, or sometimes called tweezing, requires the use of tweezers. This method uses the tweezers and literally pulls out individual strands of hair. This can be used on scalp hair, pubic hair, or any other type of hair. This is usually the most painful method of removing hair. It is also probably the slowest method, as only one hair can be removed at a time. The only advantage to using this type of hair is if you only have one or two hairs you want to remove. Also, if you are allergic to waxing agents or other chemicals, you should probably stick to tweezing. ...
... Another advantage is that tweezing is very inexpensive.
Shaving requires a shaver, either conventional or electric. Usually, pre-shaving cream is used to make the hairs stand more rigidly. This allows for a closer shave than if no pre-shaving cream was used. Shaving is often done in an up to down motion several times until the hair has been removed. Afterwards, an aftershave is used to prevent irritation and infection.
Waxing is a third method of physical hair removal. Waxing can often be very painful because it is similar to plucking, only on a larger scale. To use waxing to remove hair, a waxing agent is needed. The waxing agent is a sticky substance that will coagulate around the hair. Then a sheet of waxing paper is used to literally rip the hair from the skin. This works because the sticky substance sticks to the waxing paper and more or less glues the hair to the paper. When force is applied, the hair is pulled out the follicles.
Threading uses a string that coils around a strand of hair. After the string has coiled, it is then pulled on to pluck it out of the follicle. Threading is very similar to tweezing except that a thread is used instead of a tweezers. Like tweezing, this method is slow and can be quite painful. However, it is also inexpensive.
The chemical methods include depilatories, laser treatment, and electrolysis. Depilatories weaken the hair so that it can be easily removed when force is applied. Laser treatment uses a high powered laser to kill the follicle, so to speak. This will prevent further growth of hair in that area. Electrolysis applies an electrical current to the follicle that will cause the hair to come loose. This makes the hair much easier and a lot less painful to remove.
And that's the seven main methods of hair removal. Of course, each category can be broken down into much more specific methods. However, that is a general overview of the many ways to remove hair. Without a doubt, in the future there will be even more methods of hair removal for those who seek it.
