It was in the year 1841 that James Braid invented the name Hypnosis, before that it was known as Mesmerism. Professor Sigmond Freud started using hypnosis with the intention of proving his theory of psychoanalysis toward the latter part of the 1800's, however didn't see the benefits of it. He has been reported saying towards the end of his life, that if he learned the value of hypnosis in his earlier career, as he did coming to the end of his career, he wouldn't have stopped using it.
After that, (1901-1980) Milton Erickson tailored a different way of doing hypnosis which has improved the results of many of today's hypnotists - it has become known as Indirect Hypnosis. is commonly used to help clients who found it hard to undergo hypnosis.
Circa the same period as Psychologist Milton Erickson, a man called Dave Elman was teaching those in the medical profession a more direct take on hypnosis. Dave Elman taught a very traditional approach to hypnosis for pain control and traditional analysis. Not surprisingly some of the approaches he created are used for their fast results.
The late great Ormond McGill, best known as 'The Dean of Hypnosis', author of "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis and became known for his rapid therapy, in which he excelled. Many great hypnotists of today have been influenced by his hypnotic and therapeutic methods. Ormond passed away in 2005.
A major contributor to therapy methods used today, Gil Boyne died in 2010. A follower of Dave Elman, Gill took Dave Elmans insights and formed a complete hypno-theraputic system. The collections known as 'Transforming Therapies' were a collection of his findings in hypnosis.
