Hinduism encloses a number of regional variation, sects, subsets, with differing beliefs. Hindus believe that life and death are part of the samsara or rebirth. To be free from desire is the ultimate goal for many Hindus, thereby attaining moksha, which is considered as a transcendent state of salvation. As soon as death the body is considered impure and so should not be touched by anyone. The family members should close the mouth and eyes of the deceased person. The funeral preparations begin immediately. Traditionally, the funeral should take place as early as possible, either by the next dusk or by dawn. Hindu funeral rites or Antim Sanskar, the rites are followed by the cremation of the body. During cremation, the corpse is placed in a pyre with feet facing southwards so that the dead person can walk towards the dead. All jewels from the body is removed and the chief mourner of the family which is usually the eldest son lights up a small fire in the mouth of the person after following certain rituals. The beginning of the cremation heralds a mourning period for the family and continues for a period of 13 days from the day of death. After the funeral, the eldest son goes back to the cremation and collects the ashes in an urn. The remains are then immersed in a river. The rites last for eleven days after which the spirit is said to join the ancestors. Hence are worshipped in the sraddha ceremony
