Long gone are the days when it was considered that balers were only used for baling hay. Today, they are used in condensing waste products and creating recycled products that can come in great use in everyday business. They come in different shapes, and sizes, so that the task for which they are designed is achieved without any grievances. What makes them fit for the task is they are able to crush anything within their limits. Balers are available in various classes of distinction, but the major classification has been done on the basis of two major designs – vertical and horizontal.

Following lays a brief description about each of the equipment designs and how they contrast with each in terms of various aspects:

Vertical baler – In vertical baling machines, the bales are loaded from the front direction. They are manually operated and the compaction happens from top to bottom. The equipment has a variety of application in areas, such as construction, shops, restaurants, schools, supermarkets, etc.

Horizontal baler – In this case, the machine is loaded from the top using a forklift, ...
... or also sometimes, a conveyer belt. The machines are for huge scale operations and can be used to recycle large quantum of materials at a single point of time. It is fully automated and is suitable for factories and areas that demands high production.
Basic levels of difference:

On the basis of loading – The method of compaction is one of the major differences between these two categories. In the vertical equipment, the loading is done frontally while it is from the top in case of the other equipment.

The way they compact the material – For vertical baling machines, the compaction is done on the direction of loading and same goes for horizontal baling machines, which is from top to bottom.

Waste creation – Vertical machines is better suited to small scale operations as it causes lesser waste. Horizontal baling machines that create a high amount of production are responsible for creation of a lot of wastes.

Automation – Vertical baling machines are manually operated and thereby will definitely increase labor costs. However, in case of horizontal baling machines, they are fully automated. The machines are just required to be fed and it will keep on creating the production ceaselessly. With a large production, it surely increases profitability and reduces high rising costs of manual laboring.
