Hypnosis Can Balance The Mind And The Body!
What a fascinating topic. Hypnosis has been around for hundreds of years, but it seems that we are just starting to understand it's power. What follows is a brief overview of hypnosis down through the years, and you might find yourself quite intrigued with some of its uses.
In 1841 James Braid created the name Hypnosis, prior to that it had been known as Mesmerism. The main reason Braid choose to update the name was he had discovered a new understanding of the way hypnosis actually works. In Mesmerism, practitioners believed there was some special knowledge or unique power, and that because of this, people entered the special state. But, James Braid soon realised that it was not because of any magical power the Mesmerist held, but rather the reaction of the subject to the suggestions that caused the hypnotic state.
One of the first known people to promote self-hypnosis was a man called Emile Coue. This work he did compounded the findings of James Braid before him. The concept of hypnosis being a self controlled state, in place of one dependent on the all powerful hypnotist was now becoming popular. The result was ...
... that more people could now start to use this method to enhance their lives.
Dr Sigmond Freud began experimenting with hypnosis to supplement his ground breaking work on psychoanalysis toward the latter part of the 1800's, unfortunately he disregarded it as having little value. He has been reported as saying in the latter part of his life, if only he known the correct way to use hypnosis at the beginning of his psychoanalysis career, as he did coming to the end of his life, he wouldn't have stopped using it.
Psychologist Milton Erickson 1901 - 1980 pioneered a method of hypnotherapy which became known as indirect hypnosis, which has influenced many therapists today. This permissive style of hypnosis was in stark contrast to previous types of hypnosis; it was used mostly for hypnotising people who struggled with more traditional approaches.
Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, who was also a big contributor to hypnosis in the mid 1900's, advocated a completely different approach than Milton Erickson. Dave Elman is respected for his fast and powerful interventions, a lot of which are commonly used today. He specialised in educating anaesthesiologists in hypnotic anaesthesia, his methods are still cutting edge even to this day hypnotic childbirth and in the field of hypnotherapy.
The author of 'The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' was Ormond McGill, also known as 'The Dean'. McGill was very well known for his excellent therapeutic work. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. The Dean died in 2005.
One of the most knowledgeable hypnotists of our time, Gil Boyne died in 2010. A follower of Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, Gill took Dave Elmans teachings and fashioned a more in-depth hypno-theraputic system. The book 'Transforming Therapies' were a collection of his findings in hypnosis.
With the touch of a button, modern therapists have more access to resources than the hypnotists of old had. Many physical problems are being cured using hypnosis, incorporating the progress made through information sharing. Also hypnotherapy has come a long way in helping to treat habits like stopping smoking and losing weight and with stress and anxiety. When we look at the improvements happening in it now, it is really an amazing time for the followers of hypnosis.
